Ashley became aware of being lifted to her to her feet, voices asking if she was all right. The lights above her like the prairie sun the morning they had brought Sara to the surface.

The uniforms surrounding her spoke softly, kindly, as they led her away, as she tried to explain: “I can’t leave Sara! I can’t leave my sister! The dinosaur ate her; you’ve got to let me stay with her!”

Ashley was dragged kicking and screaming from the building toward an ambulance. She recognized Jess and Matt in the small crowd that had gathered, their faces shocked, saddened. And standing apart, the nerdy guy, whose lips formed the words, “I told you so!” but the voice was Sara’s. She watched in horror as he climbed the steps of the Redpath, morphing as he went: eye horns growing on his head, and a nose horn; he turned slightly and his profile became Sara’s; then turned again and Ashley saw the dark shadow of the triceratops; then his face; Sara’s face; blending, fading, reforming, one into the other, the darkness of evil clinging to this demonic specter.

“That’s Sara!” she cried. “He’s Sara!” But no one paid any attention to Ashley as they strapped her to a gurney. No one but the fading, shifting creature mimicking Sara’s voice, which suddenly vanished into the air like a vapor.

As the ambulance doors were closing, Ashley heard an otherworldly laugh, long, loud, sinister. Then the words: Crash and burn! Crash and burn! Another freshman bites the dust!
